Engineering the Christmas Lights: The Gift of My Father's Presence

Christmas Lights by Laurie Pillow.jpg

Attention, gift-givers and holiday fans! Newsflash: Bigger is not always better. A Christmas story:

My tree is diminutive but holds a sea of significance. It is a humble 24 inches. Yet I strung the lights with the same care and artistry that my dad used to give the project every December.

So, if not size, then what does matter? Meaning. Meaning matters. What mattered to my father was my delight. When he finished, e-v-e-r-y single branch sparkled, creating a visual symmetry that, in hindsight, must have required an insane amount of patience (that sadly didn’t get passed on to me.) As the official Assistant Ornament Hanger, I insisted no limb be left behind!

My father was an engineer. I believed he could build anything and fix anything. And, basically, he could! From carpentry to aerospace hydraulics to my balance beam and playhouse and mom’s kitchen cabinets— when called to serve, nothing- not even lack of experience- held him back. Love and dedication were his superpowers. Our family, his reason for being.

As you move into the excitement and bustle of the holidays, remember to pause and reflect. Ask yourself if the gifts on your list are genuine expressions of affection or gestures to prove your worth, outdo your ex-husband or hustle for acceptance. For those who love and appreciate you, the most meaningful present will always be your presence.
